Fox Valley Area High School Glass Exhibition
March 1 – March 29, 2015
The Fox Valley Area High School Glass Exhibition at Bergstrom-Mahler Museum of Glass will open on Sunday, March 1st to showcase talented young area artists and celebrate national Youth Art Month. An opening reception and awards ceremony will be held Sunday, March 1 from 1-3pm, with awards and remarks at 2pm.
High school teachers were invited to submit works made by their students using glass as the primary medium. The museum offered schools an opportunity to bring students to the museum to work in The Glass Studio with area artists, Sarah Rezin and Beth Wenger Johnstone, both of Appleton. Over the past several weeks more than 100 students from eleven area schools participated: Appleton Central, Appleton Career Academy, Appleton North, Freedom, Menasha, Neenah, Omro, Oshkosh West, St. Mary Central, Valley New School, and Xavier.
Throughout the months of January and February, students worked in the glass studio creating objects using flameworking to make sculptural beads. Students learned a variety of fused glass methods including mosaic fusing, woven basket fusing, and worked metal into their fused glass work. New this year, young artists learned glass cold working techniques which entailed using diamond grinders to create intricate shapes and drill holes in glass. The majority of the works on display in this exhibition were created during these workshops. Additional artwork created in classrooms at the schools will also be on display. Here is a video of students working in the studio.
Michael Meilahn, serves as judge for the exhibition. The museum would like to thank the following exhibition sponsors: The Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region, Ameriprise Financial: Hinnendael & Associates, Liberty Hall Banquet and Conference Center, Miller Electric, Mr. David Woods and the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the state of Wisconsin and The National Endowment for the Arts.
