The Fox Valley Area High School Glass Exhibition at Bergstrom-Mahler Museum of Glass will open on Saturday, March 4th to showcase talented young area artists in celebration of national Youth Art Month. Among the 242 students from 16 area schools who participated are 18 students of Maggie Weyenberg from New London High School
This is the first year Maggie Weyenberg brought her seniors from a ceramics class to the museum. But this isn’t the first time she’s been to the museum. A resident of Neenah she took classes here as a child and now brings her children here for art activities.
Since New London doesn’t have the equipment to work with glass, Weyenberg took advantage of the opportunity for her her students to work in the studio at the museum.
She says, “It’s opening a whole new experience for them and something they didn’t even know was here.”
From Sara Rezin, students learned the basics of glass fusing and a plaid technique of laying transparent glass strips on one another to create a new color. Beth Wenger Johnstone taught them flameworking while they were in the studio.
Here is some of their work.
